Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
