The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
